[Women's Indoor Track & Field] Green and Souza get second and third

(Geneva, Ohio) Cornerstone juniors, Brittany Green and Anita Souza came into the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship seeded second and third in the pentathlon. Both wasted no time demonstrating they belonged in those spots.

In the first of the five events, the 60 meter hurdles, Green blasted a personal best 8.93 good for 925 points. Souza was near her season best, clocking 8.79 for 954 points. Akela Jones of Oklahoma Baptist broke the meet record for the pentathlon 60 meter hurdles, running 8.43.

Green went from fourth to second in the standings in the second event. Her 5-6 clearance in the high jump was worth points 830 points. Souza stayed in fourth getting over 5-0.25 for 655 points. Jones broke her second record of the day clearing 6'. 

Just as she did at the 2013 championships, Green won the shot put. Her 41-5 effort added 702 more points. Souza's 31-7.5 made things close between third and fifth.

Jones sealed the win with her 19-8.75 long jump. Green got the closest jumping 18-11.25 for 780 points. Souza had the fifth best jump, going 17' for 609 points.

With just the 800 meters remaining, Green needed only to run 3:00 to keep second while Souza could claim third if she finished with Lydia Pomerenke of Concordia Nebraska and Becky Collier of Westmont. Brittany finished a contented last place running 2:47.17 to save her legs for Friday's open long jump and Saturday's high jump competition. Souza stayed with her competition and pulled away in the final 100 meters to finish in 2:28.40.

Jones won with 4153 points. Green broke her school record of 3671 set earlier this season, scoring 3730 and improving one place from nationals last year. Souza's 3437 gave her a 36 point cushion over fourth earning All-America honors for the first time in the event.

In the relay semifinals, the Golden Eagles ran the second fastest 4 x 400 meter relay in school history. Lindsay Lipa, Lyndee Sayers, Tess Odegard and Larissa Hampton combined for 3:55.64 finishing fifth in their heat and eleventh out of 23 teams. The distance medley of Jill Louisignau, Kaitlyn Bronkema, Trinity Hulst and Julie Oosterhouse finished fourteenth of nineteen teams running 12:24.59.

Cornerstone is in first place with 14 points after day 1 on the finishes of Green and Souza in the Pentathlon.
