[Women's Outdoor Track & Field] Sun shines at Michigan State

Comments

(East Lansing, Mich.) After having last week's meet cancelled, the Golden Eagles finally got the outdoor Track & Field season started at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational. Sunny skies, but bitter wind made conditions difficult, nevertheless, CU had six top-three finishes and five personal best performances.

To escape the 20 mile per hour wind, jumping events were held inside Jenison Fieldhouse. Lindsay Lipa won the triple jump with a new best of 36' 4".  Tess Odegard and Brittany Green finished second and third in the high jump with Odegard clearing the NAIA automatic national qualifying height of 5-6. Green's 5-4 clearance set a new best.

In the shot put, Haley Russell took second, extending her best to 40-6.25. Green placed fourth with a mark of 38-11.5.  Russell also took seventh in the discus, throwing 126-2.

On the track, Anita Souza won the 400 meter hurdles, clocking 1:07.05. Trinity Hulst ran a PR 4:52.66 to finish second in her heat of the 1500 and 15th out of 42 in the event. Freshman, Cathy Coryell won the fourth heat in 5:08.52, good for 27th overall.

The morning sections of the 5,000 were run with the wind chill in the teens. Julie Oosterhouse and CallyAnne Wyma raced together finishing fourth and fifth with Oosterhouse running 19:14.08 and Wyma 19:50.60

By the end of the day the wind let up significantly as Lipa, Lyndee Sayers, Oodegard, and Souza combined to finish third in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 4:06.62.
