[Women's Outdoor Track & Field] Russell demolishes Discus record

Comments

(Grand Rapids, Mich.) While most of the Cornerstone Track & Field team competed at the Hillsdale College Gina Relays, several field event athletes stayed closer to home at the Ernie Mousseau Classic hosted by Aquinas College.

For junior thrower, Haley Russell, the venue at Housman Field holds good memories as the site of her school record in the discus. Russell threw the CU best of 141-1 here last May.

On her fifth throw of the competition, Russell let loose a 144-3 effort, breaking her school record and bettering the NAIA automatic qualifying standard. "It's taken longer than I wanted to get my qualifier out of the way," Russell said. "After I did that, I just wanted to put everything into my last throw."

"Everything" turned out to be another four feet as Russell's sixth round effort measured 148' 5" putting her ninth on the NAIA list, and placing third in the meet.

Russell also took second in the shot put with a mark of 39-11.5.

In the pole vault, freshman, Cathy Kim tied for third clearing 9-6.25.
